Turning the Port of Hamburg Into a Full-Time Livestream Business

  • The Customer: Hamburg Hafen Live (YouTube, Twitch)

  • The Challenge: Bring different feeds together in clean 4K60 for live coverage of ships in the Port of Hamburg

  • The Solution: Magewell Director Plus; 2x Sony Alpha full-frame; 1x DJI Mavic 4 Pro drone; custom SRT bonding system

The story

In 2012, Patrick Ludolph behind Hamburg Hafen Live boarded a container ship for the first time and started filming documentaries on board. Years later, watching ships glide through the Port of Hamburg from the beach gave him an idea. Show it live. That idea became Hamburg Hafen Live in 2023, a YouTube and Twitch channel built around one of the world’s busiest ports. What started as a hobby project has grown into a full-time business, funded almost entirely by its own viewers.

A community-funded business

Hamburg Hafen Live has no outside sponsors. Nearly all of its funding comes directly from viewers, which puts real pressure on quality and reliability. If a stream drops or looks rough, that’s the whole business, not just a bad day.

The challenge

Delivering different angles and broadcast-level quality matters, but the setup also has to stay portable. Productions run on two Sony Alpha full-frame cameras, one telephoto and one wide-angle, plus a DJI Mavic 4 Pro drone. Bringing all three feeds together in clean 4K60, without hauling a truckload of gear to a beach or a dock, was the missing piece.

Where Director Plus fits

The Magewell Director Plus acts as the switcher for the two Sony cameras, feeding a clean 4K60 HDMI signal into a custom bonding system that streams to the production server over SRT using four SIM cards. The server is where graphics and effects get added, and where remote cameras, on a barge or a tugboat, can be brought into the mix. The drone's 1080p60 feed also runs through the Director Plus, upscaled cleanly enough to 4K60 that most viewers can't tell it apart from the native sources.

Why Magewell

No comparable device combines a 4K60 video mixer with a monitoring screen in something this compact, which made the Director Plus the missing piece for a mobile setup. Reliability sealed the decision. Unbox it, plug it in, and it works, no fiddling, no complicated backup process. For a viewer-funded business streaming two to four hours in 4K60 at 40 Mbit, that has to hold up every single time.

Favorite features

Most of the processing happens downstream on the production server, so only a portion of the Director Plus feature set gets used day to day. Two stand out. The Magewell app allows remote control of the Director Plus and turns an iPhone into an extra handheld camera on short notice. The freely configurable encoders make it possible to record one internal file in HEVC and a second in H.264 at different bitrates, without extra hardware.

The result

With the Director Plus in place, streams that run for hours in 4K60 now go out flawlessly. Hamburg Hafen Live has grown from a side project into a full-time, viewer-funded business built entirely around a shared love of the Port of Hamburg.

“I was a little skeptical about whether the device would live up to expectations, but now I’m 100% convinced.”
