Controlling Director Mini Remotely On-Site

2023.12.13

Combining multi-input switching, graphics, streaming, recording and monitoring in one compact device, Magewell's Director Mini enables a single operator to easily create visually compelling productions for live event coverage, remote production feeds and more.

In addition to controlling Director Mini via its browser-based web interface, it can also be remotely controlled via the companion Director Utility app. This blog explains two ways of connecting the Director Utility app to Director Mini – one with an existing Wi-Fi network, and another when no Wi-Fi network is available.

Wi-Fi connection mode (suitable for scenarios with an existing Wi-Fi network)

1. Install the Director Utility app on your smartphone.

2. Connect the Director Mini device to the same Wi-Fi network as the smartphone with the Director Utility app.

3. Select the "Remote Assistant" function of the Director Utility app. Find your device in the list, then tap "Connect" to enter the Remote Assistant page. The Remote Assistant offers users functionality including remote configuration, audio controls, input switching, scoreboard control, graphics triggering and more.

Hotspot Mode (suitable for scenarios without an existing Wi-Fi network)

1. Install the Director Utility app on your smartphone.

2. Using your Director Mini unit's touchscreen interface, go to "Settings>Network>Hotspot & tethering". Tap "Wi-Fi hotspot", and toggle on the switch to enable the hotspot. Configure the hotspot name ("Director_4249" in this example) and hotspot password to your desired settings.

3. Open the Wi-Fi settings on the smartphone with the Director Utility app, and connect to Director Mini's Wi-Fi hotspot in the list.

4. Run the Director Utility app and select “Remote Assistant". Find your device in the list, then tap "Connect" to enter the Remote Assistant page. The Remote Assistant offers users functionality including remote configuration, audio controls, input switching, scoreboard control, graphics triggering and more.
